Issue Two

Issue two of Grin and Bear It is here! I'm still kind of finding my feet with this zine, it doesn't really have a definate direction yet, but it's like a art/feminist/perzine. I'm working on issue three already, which will hopefully have a bit more original writing in it.

Anyway, if you would like a copy, just email your [home] address to grinandbearitzine@hotmail.co.uk  and I shall post you one! NOTE: due to limited funds I can only mail a few outside of the U.K, so first-come-first-served.
EDIT, 30th May: I have now sent all colour copies out to people, so I only have black and white ones left, (of which there are plenty!).

Jiminy cricket he flew the coop!

I went to see Moonrise Kingdom today! It was SO GOOD. I don't really know what to say about it, cos if you're familiar with Anderson's films then you know what to expect. My favourite scene was probably when they dance on the beach in their underwear to Francoise Hardy, it's really sweet and awkward. It perfectly captures that period of time when you're beginning to mature emotionally, and you have all these feelings, about which you're unable to articulate, or unsure what to do with...

And then there's the costumes and the soundtrack and the dialogue and all those familiar Andersonian tropes and um, did I mention it's SO GOOD?! Just go see it, ok?
I've got all Wes Anderson's films on dvd but this is the first I've ever seen on the big screen. I was really surprised actually, to find that it was showing in my local Cineworld, as they usually only show shitty blockbusters that are guaranteed to make millions. There was only about eight of us watching it though.

I also went to see Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture last night, where there was only six people in the theatre, which was a shame. I really enjoyed it, though most of the characters were pretty contemptible.

I also bought a nice shift dress pattern today and have made about half a dress. Since joining a sewing class I feel much more confident in my skills and less intimidated when confronted by a pattern, though that doesn't stop me from going wrong at every available opportunity. Anywhoooo I'll do a proper post on it when I'm finished. I'll leave you now with some pretty pictures...

I do

Today has been lovely and sunny, so I went for a walk and picked myself a bunch of wild flowers, well some of them are weeds, but I think they're nice.
Last night I transformed our 'snug' into a sewing room, with a little library of sewing books and old Vogues and vanilla candles.
I've also downloaded the Lost In Translation soundtrack and have been lazing around to it a lot. Ironically, for a film in which the characters can't sleep, the album is quite soporific and perfect to listen to as I drift off to sleep.

I just wanna puke on the stereo

Today I made another detachable collar. I actually made it this time, rather than hacking one off a shirt and customizing it. I think it turned out well, though I still have to add a fastening and the seams are a tad wonky but whatever.
I've recently started on a sewing course; so far we've learnt how to put zips in, sew button holes and create gathers. We're about to start making a simple skirt and I've bought this really lovely soft faux-suede fabric for it. It's super exciting!
It's also the dog's dinner time, so she's been staring at me for AGES.

"It's such a crazy, crazy feelin', I get weak in the knees, my poor old head is a-reelin'....."

In the cool of the evening...

And we are strange again

I always feel like I should write important things here, or at least something a little more interesting or creative (on my part). So that shall be my goal for the future...in the meantime, here are some [obviously instagram-edited] pretty pictures of a bag and scarf I recently purchased! Very intellectually stimulating...
